After the German government Google has banned books to scan and to all Internet users on Google books available, Germany has now devised an alternative solution, and will blossom fully in 2011 with the German Digital Library. This is the portal to 30,000 educational institutions in Germany and networking are not only books and pictures, archives, sculpture, music, music and films from cultural and scientific facilities online. Copyright this should keep the rights to their work.
Roughly speaking, we have taken together in so short a German Google Books, which is funded by our tax dollars. But I wonder what will bring the whole box. More important would be to completely reform the outdated copyright law to make way for new technologies freely. Instead, Germany wants to cook his own soup and put a portal on its own legs. Google had scanned the books free of charge by the way.
In addition, the portal of the German digital library is certainly not nearly as clear and easy to use as Google Books. When I as for example the side of the Federal Archives to look at pictures, where are to be anywhere to find images that are subject to a Creative Commons license, I doubt on the " quantum leap "German Digital Library.
