Crysis on the iPhone - Presentation of the gaming service OnLive onDemand

Another reason not to leave the house. It is now months since one of the OnDemand streaming service OnLive reported. Now comes one of the final phase of getting closer, to be launched by 2010 the final service (initially in the U.S.). The founder and CEO of the StartUp OnLive, Steve Perlman, now has as part of a 48-minute demonstration of the service presented in detail and demonstrated, among other things, as it is now possible to play Crysis with the iPhone.

OnLive is a gaming onDemand service. The game plays basically no longer on the home computer, but on servers. The end user thus receives only the image of the game being streamed to the computer. For a lag-free gaming experience treaties were made with AT & T, which have also invested in OnLive. Through a distributed network of servers in the U.S. it is almost everywhere be able to get a ping on ms of 80, which comes on the authority of OnLive playing on our own computers very close and you could not tell the difference, whether you're the game runs at home gambles or streamed.

Here is the presentation in full-length (48 minutes):

Gunman - Augmented Reality Paintball for iPhone

Do you know paintball? This dangerous killer game where you marked with paint balls other people? And she also knows Augmented Reality? It is located according to Wikipedia, a "computer-based extension of the perception of reality." Ultimately, this one does nothing more than to capture your surroundings. The instrument with which one does this, a kind of layer sets over the picture and expands it refers to useful functions. So you can find for example in a foreign city through the filming of famous buildings by a mere click on this more about the building. But there are still a lot more playful applications. For example, the gunman app for the Apple iPhone .

For those who have seen the video, despite not quite what it is Gunman:
Before the games, the color of the sweater opponent is marked so that the software knows what that looks like the others. Now you can start the game. It is a few steps apart, so that one no longer sees the other. The iPhone continues to act as a kind of marker, as in paintball. If you have discovered the enemy now, "aims" to him and pressed on the display once to select it. IPhone has to be made the enemy, vibrates. Then starts a new round. Gunman takes advantage of the camera and wireless advantage. Communicate with the latter, Apple's mobile phones. In the not too distant future, the software should be as far advanced that even team death matches and capture the flag - rounds will be possible. Fascinatingly, the app probably only costs 79 cents.

Granted, the whole may well be a little nerdy. But that does not detract from the ingenuity of the developers. I play in person but still prefer paintball.

What do you think of the app? Is something morally defensible?

New review of the Google phone Nexus One

Through the commentary of juelu (thanks!), I'm on a new - albeit amateurish-recorded - hit video. Despite the shaky camera and the modest English you can still get a glimpse of the Nexus One.

Why have not I'm going to buy an eBook reader

2009 was the year that the e-book readers have only really taken away. Also at this year's book fair, they were a focal point. From time to time one reads a Twitter Tweets such as " What is it just the highlight in the e-book reader heaven? ". But somehow it seems as if these things are not really sold. Also, I'm going to define such a thing yet. The reasons are obvious, in a nutshell.

First, it is true that there is currently little to buy eBooks. At Amazon, the majority of the books in the English language. And the newspapers or magazines are still hesitant to really take the big step. Only two newspapers published as an eBook. One of them was the FAZ and its premiere was probably miserable . The TAZ currently engineering diligently to produce a digital output. The problem is that with the epub format is not so freely given to the format is, as printed in an edition. Images can be placed just hard to see why the digital edition differs from the printed.

Another reason may well be clear of the format war between the eBooks. Amazon's Kindle and the nook rely on a proprietary format, although already known is a free standard. Epub on the market. It should be clear why Amazon and Barnes & Noble to put your own formats: It should only be purchased eBooks from their shops.

Another reason could be probably the DRM copy protection. The book industry is making the same mistake as the music industry: one thinks, by a protection mechanism would be the greater book sales. That's not, as in this example: For example, the author Cory Doctorow presents his works under a Creative Commons license for free to the Internet community as well. Nevertheless, sales of his books are not the stream disappeared. He himself says that e-books are just a lure and not a replacement .
DRM can not simply copy the eBooks to a reader. This can be done only by the Adobe software "Adobe Digital Editions." Another stumbling block that is.

Finally, there are still major obstacles that must be overcome, the market for now. Is it so far, but I buy things. But not until then.

Merry Christmas!

Etherpad clones are taking off

No sooner had the source code of the online collaboration tool Etherpad is released, beginning to emerge clones of the service and thus replace the expiring service next year.

Since there would be the one PiratenPad , a German clone. PiratenPad you seen this before? Since it is also quite true. The operator of the German clone is no less than Germany, the Pirate Party. Similarly, also operates the Swedish Pirate Party has Ehterpadserver: PiratePad .

Second, there were still the pages iEtherPad , netherpad and etherpad.pagefault.me . The latter will be operated but not really professional. The operator says himself that he only does it " just because he could . " First, iEtherPad is also worth mentioning. Thus, the operator of the Clones is a Microsoft employee. Etherpad is now Google Code and the 'i' in the URL is typical Apple. So, all in one pot.

Whether these clones is now prevail in the stars. A tough competition will be in the future Google Wave, the service for which the ex-employees now work Etherpad. I'm curious :)

My fellow bloggers Otti GeekLike of the Motorola Milestone times under the microscope and recorded his first experience in a video. Here is a small table listing the pros and cons:

Con

  • Volume control adjusts the volume of the ringtone directly
  • Selection of games is still meager

Following are the very nice first turn and made Unboxing + Try various apps on the milestone. Beautifully cooked Review! :)

The gaming word of the year 2009 is ...

A few days ago told me about the action of PCAction could be voted on at the gaming-word of the year 2009. Well, "Unwörter" in the sense they are, like Project Dragon responded, not really. It's probably more to the gaming concept. But that's beside the point. The outcome of the vote has now been announced .

The winner is-who would have thought the different word-killer game with 35.22%. Surprisingly, this result was not really, and this term has been often wrongly used by the press in to the mainstream to be popular.
In second place comes "Zensursula" (7.86%), followed closely by the on-line activation (7.55%).

So you get the new interface of Firefox 4.0 today!

The responsible designer of Firefox 4.0, Stephen Horlander, is already working hard on the new surface to version 4 of the fox river and get to look like this:

As you can see from the screenshot, the tab bar is moved upward and then placed underneath the Address bar. This is the first sense, logically, after all, each tab a different address. In addition, now receives the App button collection, which displaces the "File" bar. So now all the features of Firefox on the new buttons are accessible. One or two others like this kind of organization to be known. Thus one finds in the new Microsoft Office also has a phone button. This looks like the end is still uncertain.

If you would like the new theme today already have can be solved. Thus, among other things, the plugin Strata40 available, what are the fox is already the new splendor.
Everything you need to do is download the plugin and restart your Firefox. Then you see your Firefox like this:

Clearly, the design does not exactly approach the new theme of Firefox 4.0. But we must not forget that the current draft also still developing in the development. In addition, such things as the app buttons are also very difficult to implement via plugins. For the transition period until the release of the Fox 4.0 but still great :)
